The competence center for foreign direct investment of the Financial Times, fDi Intelligence, has once again compared Europe’s future-oriented tech cities. In the ranking, Basel achieved the top position for European tech cities of the future, for cities with populations of between 100,000 and 350,000 people.

The city owes its top ranking above all to its economic potential. In the specific ranking for this aspect, Basel took second place across Europe. The city’s significant human capital and good quality of life saw it also ranked in fourth place for this category.

The ranking also highlighted that Basel is home to major pharma giants such as RocheNovartis, and Roivant Sciences. However, the city also attracts investments in the area of professional services. Hence service providers were responsible for more than a quarter of new investments in Basel in the period between October 2016 and September 2021. In addition, the city’s key strategic position at the border between Switzerland, Germany, and France was highlighted.
