Record figure for startups in the Basel Area

Basel Area Business & Innovation has supported a record number of 96 company startups in 2022. The number of settlements remained stable versus 2021, with 35 companies moving to the region. In terms of sector, life sciences dominate among the startups and settlements.

Basel Area Business & Innovation supported the foundation of 96 startups last year. This is a new record, as the investment and innovation promotion agency for the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt and Jura reported in a press release. Basel Area Business & Innovation helped 20 more companies establish themselves in 2022 than in the previous year.
The number of companies settling in the cantons of the Basel Area in 2022 remained stable versus 2021, at 35. “The Basel Area economic region can once again look back on a great year,” said Christof Klöpper, CEO of Basel Area Business & Innovation. “We achieved amazing results for both new company settlements and startups in 2022.”
27 of 35 settlements from abroad
Of the 96 new company startups, 21 operate in the pharmaceutical and medical field. With 18 startups, the service sector comes next, followed by construction with 11 and ICT with 8. Many startups benefited from the Venture Monitoring Program, a mentoring for startups service run by the economic promotion agency. Basel Area Business & Innovation further highlights the cleantech company Kuori, which has raised €2.3 million from investors since it was established in spring 2022.
Of the 35 settlements, 24 were attributable to companies in the pharmaceutical and medical sector. In terms of country of origin, the largest share was accounted for by Europe, with 14 companies. Asia follows with seven and the USA with six new companies settling in Switzerland. Eight companies moved to the Basel Area from other Swiss cantons last year.
